What’s it all about?
It all started with a question:
Why aren’t there tutors for high-achieving students?
With so many tutoring options for students who are struggling, who are behind, who need remediation, what about the students at the top of their class who want more depth, more enrichment, and more of a challenge? Students who have mastered the material are often ignored in class, making them less focused, and more off-task, frequently causing them to fall behind in school.
My main goal is to help those students at the top soar to even greater heights.
With my vast experience and depth of knowledge, I can teach an entire year-long subject in only 40 hours and still have students testing into higher sections when they transition to a more traditional classroom setting.
Background
I’ve been a teacher for almost 20 years and have taught in several kinds of schools, serving as a history department chair and I even taught a “boy band” at one point; getting students to learn fractions can be difficult when fans throw themselves at the tour bus.
When Covid-19 put everyone online I found my calling as a private enrichment teacher and tutor for students who like virtual learning as an option. I’m a vendor in several charter schools including the IEM schools and Blue Ridge Academy.
I’ve been teaching for so long that some of these are actual physical photos.
Smart is something you can become.
When not teaching, I’m writing curriculum; something I’ve been doing for over 15 years! Subjects and classes I’ve designed include History, Science (Biology and Physics), English, Geography, Astronomy, and Math.
If you just want the notes, you can find them here.
I have a B.A. in History (something unusual for many history teachers) but think of myself as a Social Studies teacher as we learn a lot more and often reference current events. My class does not have a textbook; we take notes with discussion topics and relevant questions about what we’re learning. I write fresh and new content each year and always look to improve my instruction.
I’m interested in teaching someone how to think, not telling them what to think.
Classes and Costs
My classes are similar to what I taught in the classroom but online. You can hold a cute dog or sip hot chocolate while we learn about ancient Persia. My classes follow the CA standard for History / Social Studies in terms of content, but since we learn online, I find that instruction is far more efficient and effective, so we learn more in less time. I also teach science (biology and physics) by special request.
You can use charter funds as I’m an authorized vendor.
Note: My classes, both in person and online, are secular and have no religious affiliation.
